Cologne on foot
Cologne is about 2,000 years old, and you can see it while walking. The cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was only completed in 1880, stands right next to the main station. The city centre has twelve large Romanesque churches, with remains of the Roman and the medieval city wall in between. The real Cologne, though, is in its neighbourhoods, the Veedel, for example the Südstadt.
With CuriFox the walk becomes a free walking tour: the app leads you from place to place and tells a short story about each one.
Where to walk in Cologne: ideas for start and finish
In the app you only pick a start and a finish, CuriFox builds the way between them. A few ideas for Cologne:
Old town and the Rhine embankment. From the cathedral through the old town to the Heumarkt and back along the Rhine: just under 2 kilometres, the shortest loop. Keep going and you pass the Rheinauhafen with its three crane houses.
Südstadt. Around the Chlodwigplatz with the Severinstor gate, the Severinstraße and the pubs at the Ubierring. From the cathedral to Chlodwigplatz is about 3 kilometres; the quarter itself takes an hour to walk.
Belgian Quarter and Ehrenfeld. From Rudolfplatz through the Belgian Quarter to Venloer Straße and on to Ehrenfeld with its murals: 3 to 4 kilometres, many cafés on the way.
Deutz and the right bank. Across the Hohenzollern bridge to Deutz, along the Rheinboulevard and back over the Deutzer bridge. A loop of about 3 kilometres with the best known view of cathedral and old town.
Nippes and Agnesviertel. North of the centre, quieter: from Ebertplatz through the Agnesviertel to the Nippes weekly market, around 3 kilometres.
Lindenthal. In the west the city forest with the Aachener Weiher pond and the Lindenthal animal park. From the university through the park 3 to 5 kilometres, good for families.
Tip: the Rhine has paths on both banks, so a long loop of 7 to 15 kilometres can be closed over two bridges.
