Hamburg on foot

Hamburg is best explored along the water. The Speicherstadt warehouse district and the neighbouring Kontorhaus district have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015. From there it is a short walk to the Elbphilharmonie, opened in 2017, to the Landungsbrücken piers and to the Michel, the church of St. Michael.

With CuriFox the way becomes a free walking tour: the app leads you from place to place, tells short stories and asks riddles about what is in front of you.

Where to walk in Hamburg: ideas for start and finish

In the app you only pick a start and a finish, CuriFox builds the way between them. Hamburg is a city on the water, almost every loop has a river or a canal. A few ideas:

Speicherstadt and HafenCity. From the town hall through the Speicherstadt, a World Heritage site since 2015, to the Elbphilharmonie: about 2.5 kilometres over bridges and between brick warehouses. The shortest loop with the strongest Hamburg feeling.

Landungsbrücken and Altona. From the Landungsbrücken past the old Elbe tunnel of 1911, along the fish market to the Altonaer Balkon: around 3 kilometres, always with the Elbe and the ships in view.

Alster. Once around the Outer Alster is about 7.5 kilometres, flat and without traffic lights by the water. If you want less, take only the Inner Alster and the Jungfernstieg, that is 2 kilometres.

St. Pauli and the Schanze. From the Reeperbahn past the flea market at the Feldstraße bunker into the Schanzenviertel: 2 to 3 kilometres. Meant as an evening loop, the finish is a pub.

Ottensen and Övelgönne. From Altona through Ottensen down to the Elbe beach at Övelgönne with its old pilots' houses: 3 to 4 kilometres. Further west the stair quarter of Blankenese, a loop of its own, 2 kilometres with many steps.

Eppendorf and the Stadtpark. From the Eppendorf market along the Isebek canal or through Winterhude into the Stadtpark with its planetarium: 3 to 4 kilometres, quiet and green.

Tip: for 7 to 15 kilometres follow the Elbe west, from the Landungsbrücken to Blankenese is about 12 kilometres, the S-Bahn takes you back.
