Düsseldorf on foot
In Düsseldorf almost everything leads to the Rhine. From the old town the riverside promenade takes you to the MedienHafen, where Frank Gehry's leaning buildings have stood since 1999. The Rhine Tower rises next to them, and in the other direction lies the Königsallee with its canal.
CuriFox turns this into a free self-guided walking tour: you decide the way, the app shows you the places along it and asks a small riddle at each one.
Where to walk in Düsseldorf: ideas for start and finish
In the app you only pick a start and a finish, CuriFox builds the way between them. A few ideas that work well in Düsseldorf:
Old town and the Rhine embankment. From the Burgplatz along the riverside promenade to the Rhine Tower is a good 2 kilometres, flat and without a single traffic light by the river. The shortest loop for an evening.
MedienHafen. Behind the Rhine Tower the old trading harbour begins, with Frank Gehry's leaning buildings from 1999 and the converted warehouses. From the old town to the far end of the harbour is about 3 to 4 kilometres if you follow the basins.
Königsallee and Hofgarten. The Kö with its canal in the middle, then the Hofgarten park up to the Jägerhof palace: a quiet stretch of around 2 kilometres through the most expensive and the greenest part of the centre.
Oberkassel. Across the Oberkassel bridge to the left bank. Art nouveau facades along the Luegallee and the view from the Rhine meadows back to the old town. As a loop from the old town, 4 to 5 kilometres.
Kaiserswerth. In the far north, reached with the U79 line. A small old town on the Rhine and the ruins of Frederick Barbarossa's imperial palace. A loop of 2 to 3 kilometres, good for families.
Benrath. In the south lies the 18th century Benrath Palace with its park. From the S-Bahn station through the park and back is about 3 kilometres.
Tip: choose a square with a café or beer garden as the finish, then the walk ends where you wanted to go anyway.
